Standard way of handling plugins in browsers

Well, it's seems one of my calls on my browser changes wishlist has been heard. Mozilla announced today that:

Apple, Macromedia, Opera and Sun Microsystems join in push to modernize plugins and create a richer web experience. In response to demand by users, plugin vendors and web developers for web browser support for an open, secure and scriptable plugin model...

At worst this will result in dealing with two plugin's - one for this new standard and the other being Internet Explorer. Well it's a lot better than today with different plugin's for each browser, though the main ones support all browsers.
